The History of TAS

  • Origins: Initiated in 1996 by Professor Norman Sartorius during his presidency of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA), with a focus on addressing stigma and discrimination associated with schizophrenia.
  • Purpose: Established as a global platform for researchers, policymakers, advocates, and individuals with lived experience to share insights, evidence, and best practices in tackling mental health stigma.
  • Aim: To drive multidisciplinary collaboration and translate anti-stigma research and theory into actionable, real-world interventions.
  • Conferences to Date: 10 international conferences conducted between 2001 and 2024, with nearly 5,000 delegates participating. The last five conferences have averaged approximately 400 delegates each.
